Grading: Students will be graded in two ways: Formal Performance Assessment of specific songs & Daily Performance in lessons.
Performance Assessments are graded out of 20 points. There will only be 1-3 formal performance assessments each quarter.
Daily Performance (beginning 2nd quarter!) is graded out of 10 points. This is graded each lesson unless there is a substitute or other extenuating circumstance. These grades are based on students tone (2), posture and position (3), and homework preparation (5). With appropriate practice and effort, most students should easily be achieving an 8 or 9 out of 10 at each lesson.
How much practice is expected/required? I expect students to practice enough to make their homework songs easy and comfortable to play. For some students this will mean more time needs to be spent, others will not need as much time. I strongly recommend that brass players try to play a minimum of 5 days a week to build the lip muscle needed to play our extended notes. Practice time never needs to exceed 30 minutes in length (though students may certainly practice longer if they wish). Even 10 minutes a day over 5-7 days a week will make a huge impact on their playing ability and comfort with their music.
