What are we doing in our Music Class?
Music is a very active subject. In vocal music your child will be singing, dancing, listening, playing instruments, and reading music in addition to more traditional paper and pencil type lessons. All of these activities require attention and participation. Students will not complete many written assignments, but are continually being assessed as they are actively demonstrating their understanding. These assessments take many forms including, but not limited to teacher observations of their singing or rhythm performance, their participation in musical games, and their ability to follow listening maps.
Because of the active nature of my classroom, your child should wear clothing and shoes that are comfortable for movement. Additionally, if your child develops an injury or illness which could affect their comfort while moving or singing, please jot down a brief note or email me so that I can plan accordingly.
Finally, please encourage your children to take music seriously, and make musical discussions a part of your life at home. You may think you have little musical talent or don’t know the first thing about classical music, but I assure you, no one is truly tone deaf, and simple comments about music on the radio or even just asking what was learned in music class this week go a long way to show that music is valued in your household. I don’t expect all of my students to become professional musicians, but it is my hope that they can listen to the radio or download a song and be able to appreciate what they are listening to.
