What instrument do I need to rent or purchase?
- For Elementary and Middle school - all percussion students must have a bell/pad kit. This kit comes with a bell set, a drum practice pad, a stand that holds both of these, as well as sticks and mallets. It should come in a cloth case in either a backpack or rolling pack style. I strongly recommend the rolling pack since it is pretty heavy. The link below shows Ludwig's bell/pad kit.
What book do I need to buy?
What should my child be practicing at home?
What can I do to support or help my child at home?
- Sound Innovations, book 1 for Combined Percussion
What should my child be practicing at home?
- Students will have ongoing homework on both the bells and the drums throughout the year. They can either practice both during the same practice session or alternate days through the week. Bells will initially require the most practice and likely cause the most frustration until reading the music from the staff becomes more comfortable.
What can I do to support or help my child at home?
- Listen to them when they are playing. Learn to read the music with them - have them teach you. Find videos of inspiring percussionists on YouTube to watch with your child. Encourage perseverance when things are hard or frustrating!! Remind them to practice even if they think they really do not want to!
